ABC 2008 Summer Show Reviews

By Shawn McKenzie 08/04/2008

Here are my reviews of the new 2008 ABC summer shows.  More reviews will be added as they premiere and are reviewed (check back to this page for those reviews.)

Dance Machine” Review

If you want to watch a competitive dance show but you don’t want to have to tune in every week to see the latest person to be eliminated, this show may be for you.  Each week, six ordinary people who think they can dance (they can dance better than me…mainly because I have no rhythm…but they would be crushed on FOX’s “So You Think You Can Dance” during the audition rounds) compete to be that week’s “Dance Machine.”  The first two contestants compete by dancing to the same song in a randomly chosen genre (swing, hip-hop, country, etc.), and then the studio audience decides who is the better dancer.  The next two do the same thing, and then the last two do the same thing as well.  Eventually, after these “dance-offs,” it is paired down to two contestants, and the winner receives a cash prize of $100,000 and a “Dance Machine Disco Bubble” trophy.  Jason Kennedy of E! News is host while DJ Rodney Perry spins the tunes (and puts on some goofy outfit to the theme of the chosen music genre.)  The occupations of the contestants range from mixed martial artist to cashier to fashion designer.  Some could this show as a guilty pleasure because it shows people dancing about as well as your average home viewer could dance, but I prefer to see actual skilled dancers.  Seeing as it has been shuffled off to Friday nights, I think that it is safe to say that ABC is just using the last of its filler Writer’s Strike reality shows to plug up a programming hole so that they don’t have to air another rerun of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”  I certainly don’t plan on watching this show for much longer, which is good…because it only lasted five excruciating weeks.
